1. Introduction

Knotchat ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our anonymous chat platform at knot.chat (the "Service").

By using Knotchat, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy. If you do not agree with the terms of this privacy policy, please do not access the Service. Additional protections apply to users under 18 ("Minor Users") and are described in Section 9.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Registration Information

When you register for Knotchat, we collect:

  • Email address (for account recovery and security notifications only)
  • Username (randomly generated or chosen by you)
  • Hashed password (we never store plain text passwords)
  • Account creation timestamp

2.2 Information We Do NOT Collect

To protect your anonymity, we explicitly do NOT collect:

  • Real names or personal identification
  • Phone numbers
  • Physical addresses
  • Chat conversation content
  • Voice or video recordings
  • Browsing history on other sites
  • Social media profiles

2.3 Technical Information

For security and service functionality, we automatically collect:

  • IP address (for geographic matching and security only)
  • Browser type and version
  • Device type (mobile/desktop)
  • Time zone setting
  • Connection quality metrics

3. How We Use Your Information

3.1 Service Provision

  • Enable account creation and management
  • Match you with other users based on preferences
  • Provide customer support when requested
  • Process Premium subscriptions
  • Send important service updates

3.2 Safety and Security

  • Detect and prevent fraud, spam, and abuse
  • Enforce our Terms of Service

  • Protect users from harmful content (with elevated priority for Minor Users)

4. Data Storage and Security

4.1 Conversation Data

We do NOT store any chat conversations, messages, or call recordings.

All communications happen in real-time through peer-to-peer connections. Once a chat session ends, no record of the conversation exists on our servers.

4.2 Security Measures

We implement industry-standard security measures including:

  • 256-bit SSL/TLS encryption for all data transmission
  • Bcrypt hashing for password storage
  • Regular security audits and penetration testing
  • Secure data centers with physical access controls
  • Employee access restrictions and training
  • Automated threat detection systems

4.3 Data Retention

Account information is retained as long as your account is active. You may request deletion at any time. Technical logs are automatically deleted after 30 days. For Minor User accounts, additional data-minimization and retention limits apply as described in Section 9.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at support@knot.chat. We will respond to your request within 30 days. We may ask for verification to ensure account security. For Minor Users, requests must be made or confirmed by a parent or legal guardian (see Section 9.2).

6. Cookies and Tracking

6.1 Essential Cookies

We use only essential cookies required for the Service to function:

  • Session cookies for authentication
  • Security cookies to prevent fraud
  • Preference cookies for language and settings

6.2 No Third-Party Tracking

We do NOT use:

  • Google Analytics or similar tracking services
  • Facebook Pixel or social media trackers
  • Advertising cookies or retargeting
  • Cross-site tracking technologies

7. Information Sharing

7.1 We Never Sell Your Data

We will never sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties. We never sell or share data of Minor Users for cross-context behavioral advertising.

7.2 Limited Sharing Scenarios

We may share information only in these limited circumstances:

  • Legal Requirements: When required by law or valid legal process
  • Safety: To protect users from harm or illegal activities
  • Service Providers: With trusted partners who help operate our Service (under strict confidentiality agreements)
  • Business Transfers: In case of merger or acquisition (with continued privacy protection)

8. International Data Transfers

Knotchat operates globally. Your information may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your own. We ensure all transfers comply with applicable data protection laws and maintain equivalent protection levels.

For EU users, we use Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the European Commission for data transfers outside the EEA.

9. Privacy of Minor Users

We provide enhanced privacy protections for users under 18 and follow strict data-minimization principles.

Knotchat permits users under 18 ("Minor Users") to access the Service only with verifiable parental or legal guardian consent. We never knowingly permit access by users below the minimum digital consent age applicable in their jurisdiction (for example, 13 under U.S. COPPA or 16 under EU GDPR-K unless lowered by member state law). If we learn that we have collected data from such a user, we delete it promptly.

9.1 Data Minimization

For Minor User accounts, we collect only the data strictly necessary to provide the Service, fulfill legal obligations, and safeguard the user. For Minor Users we do NOT collect or process:

  • Biometric identifiers or facial recognition vectors
  • Precise geolocation data
  • Advertising identifiers or cross-app tracking IDs
  • Behavioral profiling, interest graphs, or psychometric signals
  • Third-party data enrichment about the Minor User

9.2 Parental and Guardian Rights

Parents or legal guardians of a Minor User may, upon verification of their relationship to the Minor User, exercise the following rights on the Minor User's behalf:

  • Access: Request a copy of all personal data we hold about the Minor User
  • Correction: Correct or update personal data of the Minor User
  • Deletion: Delete the Minor User's account and associated personal data
  • Restriction: Restrict or object to specific data processing activities
  • Withdraw Consent: Withdraw consent previously granted, in which case we will deactivate the account

We respond to verified guardian requests within 30 days and free of charge.

9.3 No Advertising, Profiling, or Automated Decision-Making

We do not use Minor Users' data for behavioral advertising, ad measurement based on user profiles, retargeting, or automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects on the Minor User.

9.4 Retention Limits for Minor User Data

Minor User personal data is retained only as long as the Minor User account is active. Upon deletion request from the Minor User or their guardian, we delete personal data within 30 days, except where law requires retention (for example, for fraud investigation or legal hold).

9.5 How to Contact Us About a Minor User

To exercise the rights above, raise safety concerns, or report suspected unauthorized use of a Minor User account, contact support@knot.chat. We may ask for verification of your guardian relationship.

10. California Privacy Rights (CCPA)

California residents have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA):

  • Right to know what personal information is collected
  • Right to know if personal information is sold or disclosed
  • Right to opt-out of the sale of personal information
  • Right to non-discrimination for exercising privacy rights

Note: Knotchat does not sell personal information, and never sells or shares Minor User data for cross-context behavioral advertising.

11. European Privacy Rights (GDPR & GDPR-K)

If you are in the European Economic Area (EEA), you have additional rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and additional GDPR-K protections if the user is under 16 (or under the lower digital consent age set by member state law):

  • Legal basis for processing is consent or legitimate interests; for Minor Users, parental consent is the primary legal basis
  • Right to withdraw consent at any time
  • Right to lodge a complaint with supervisory authorities

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date.

For significant changes, we will provide prominent notice through the Service or via email. Your continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
